TxDOT employees set example

The people who build and maintain Texas highways are very careful in how they drive on and off the job. They want to set a good example for the motorists who use the roads they build.

Several Pecos and Balmorhea residents who work for the Texas Department of Transportation have continued to achieve an admirable record on that score, according to a TxDOT spokesman in the Odessa District.

The Reeves County employees were among the nearly 300 TxDOT workers from throughout the 12-county West Texas district who were cited for their on-the-job safe driving habits at an annual safety awards presentation April 26. This year's event was held at the Civic Center in Iraan.

Local employees singled out for safe driving records with the Texas Department of Transportation included Pecos Area Office Manager Lily Talamantez, whose 37 years without an accident is the district's longest active mark; Balmorhea Maintenance Supervisor Jose Rodriguez, 27 years; Tommy Dominguez and Rosendo Galindo, 22 years; Manuel Gonzales 21 years; William Brown 20 years; Pecos Maintenance Supervisor Larry Levario, Manuel Muniz Jr., and Israel Rubio, 19 years; John Salcido, 17 years; Gary Rumbaugh, Jr. and Guadalupe Rede, 15 years; Daniel Reyes, Benjamin Hinojos, Victor Mondragon, and Samuel Natividad, 14 years; Gilberto Gonzales, 12 years; and Pecos Area Assistant Engineer Kelli Revennaugh and Jesus Matta, 11 years.

Others receiving awards with less than 10 years of safe driving on the job were Jesse Anchondo, Alfredo Herrera, Gilbert Herrera, Oscar Martinez, Marcelino Munoz, Jr., Hector Tarango, Mario Tarin, Arturo Vasquez, Javier Lozano, Manuel Mendoza, David Portillo, Joe Rodriguez, Miguel Matta, Juan Muniz, Cijifredo Zuniga and Jaime Mendoza.

Lauren D. Garduno, who heads up the Odessa District, presented the safe driving awards and praised the Pecos and Balmorhea employees for their commitment to driving safety.

"Highway safety is at the heart of everything the Texas Department of Transportation does," said Garduno. "We know that building safe roads and driving safely go hand-in-hand," he said.

"And one of the best ways we can emphasize safe driving on Texas highways is to set a good example outselves," he added. "That's why we salute these employees for year-after-year of accident-free driving while on the job," he said.

Pecos and Balmorhea are in the Texas Department of Transportation's Odessa District, which includes 12 counties: Andrews, Crane, Ector, Loving, Martin, Midland, Pecos, Reeves, Terrell, Upton, Ward and Winkler.
