Eagles to compete Friday at Lamesa qualifiers meet

Region I-4A competition isn't for another week, but the Pecos Eagles track teams will be getting in some pre-district work this Friday, when they travel to Lamesa for the regional qualifiers meet.

The meet will begin at 2:30 p.m. with field events, while the running preliminaries are scheduled to start about 3:40 p.m.

Pecos' girls edged Clint to win the District 2-4A Track and Field Championships last Saturday at Eagle Stadium, while the boys placed second to El Paso Mountain View, and qualified seven different athletes for next weekend's Region I-4A meet at Angelo State University. Five different Pecos girls earned regional berths, though at Friday's meet regional alternates also will be allowed to compete in events.

Coaches Roxie Chavez and Jerry Parent said not all of their regional qualifiers will be making the trip to Lamesa, so some alternates would be taking their place.

"In the 800 meter relay, JJ (Jessica Rodriguez) won't be there, so I'm putting Leslie Rodriguez in," Chavez said. Rodriguez is one of three regional qualifers who'll be in San Elizario on Friday for Pecos' final regular season softball game. "Nikki (Reyna) won't be going because of softball, so Alice (Alessandra Carrasco) will be running in the quarter (400 meters), and Stephanie (Herrera) won't be going because of softball."

Herrera won the discus and placed second in the shot put at district, while Rodriguez was second in the 200 meter dash as well as being part of the first-place 800 meter relay team and Reyna is a regional alternate in the high jump, and as a member of the 1600 meter relay squad.

Jessica Martinez, who qualified in the high jump, 800 meter run and 1600 meter run, will be entered at Lamesa, and Chavez said Leslie Rodriguez will also run in the 1600 meters, while Christina Arenivas, who finished second in the 300 meter hurdles, will run that and the 800 meters at Lamesa.

Parent doesn't have any team members with conflicts due to baseball, but said grades will keep two of his runners out of both Friday's meet and regionals next weekend in San Angelo.

As a result, John Parent will join Peter Juarez, Jason Sanchez and Jason Gonzales on the 1600 meter relay team, while Will Armstrong will be the Eagles' lone pole vaulter at regionals.

The Eagles' regular 400 meter relay team of Juarez, Sanchez, Armstrong and Rashad Terry will run on Friday, and Terry will also run the 100 and 200 meter dashes, while Jason Gonzales will compete in the hurdles.

Terry won both his individual events, while Gonzales was second in the 110 meter hurdles at district. Terry and Bradley will also compete in the high jump, Parent said.
