Native Pecos man running for 24th District seat

PECOS, Fri., March 15, 2002 -- A West Texas man is the Republican candidate for U.S. Congress in the 24th District of Texas.

Mike Rivera Ortega, who was born in Pecos and later moved to Kermit, is a candidate for the U.S. House of Representatives. Ortega graduated from Kermit High School in 1979, where he was class president.

The 24th District has been redrawn for the 2002 election and covers part of the Dallas-Fort Worth metro area.

Task Force busts bus rider, confiscates $18,900

By ROSIE FLORES
Staff Writer
PECOS, Fri., March 15, 2002 -- An investigation is continuing in the case of a California man who was traveling with a large amount of cash on a Greyhound bus.

"We do routine checks on the buses," said Trans Pecos Drug Task Force Lieutenant Larry Arredondo.

Arredondo said that about 4:20 p.m., Thursday, officers with the task force detained a California man, Richard Calhoun, 28, who was traveling from Louisiana to California carrying a large amount of cash.

"Calhoun, who was carrying $18,900 in U.S. currency, was detained and the money confiscated," said Arredondo.

Arredondo said that they have information that leads them to believe the cash is related to criminal activity. "We believe it is drug-related," said Arredondo. "He was carrying the cash in his coat," he said.

"If charges are filed on this individual it will be a third degree felony," said Arredondo.

Arredondo said the task force has been busy with drug interdiction and checking the buses, making sure no illegal drugs are being transported via public transportation.

"We want to make sure everyone is safe and drugs are not coming through our county in this area," he said.
