Ortega girls celebrate birthdays

Bianca and Destiny Ortega celebrated their birthdays recently with a party held in their honor at the Eastside Community Center.

Bianca was five years on Dec. 31 and Destiny turned three on Dec. 29.

Theme for the special event was Power Puff Girls and the girl's favorite gift was big bears.

They are the daughters of Danny and Tomasita Ortega of Pecos.

Maternal grandparents are Manuel Orona and the late Dolores Orona.

Paternal grandparents are Danny and Bibi Ortega and Boni and Jane Garcia all of Pecos.

Tarango protects Dallas airport

Texas Army National Guard Staff Sgt. Ramiro Tarango, of Pecos, observes passengers and security personnel at a security checkpoint at Dallas Love Field.

Tarango repairs special electronics devices as a member of Company B, 372nd Forward Support Battalion.

He received training from Federal Aviation Administration officials and is familiar with detection equipment and security checkpoint procedures.

Tarango joins hundreds of Texas citizen-soldiers who are protecting 26 commercial airports statewide as part of America's Homeland Defense Plan.

Free trees available for planting

Ten free American redbud trees will be given to each person who joins The National Arbor Day Foundation during February.

The free trees are part of the nonprofit Foundation's Trees for America campaign.

Redbuds have clusters of rosy pink flowers in spring, and dark green summer leaves turning to yellow in the fall.

The trees will be shipped postpaid at the right time for planting between March 1 and May 31 with enclosed planting instructions. The six to 12 inch trees are guaranteed to grow, or they will be replaced free of charge.

To become a member of the Foundation and receive the free trees, send a $10 contribution to Ten Free Redbud Trees, National Arbor Day Foundation, 100 Arbor Avenue, Nebraska City, NE 68410, by Feb. 28.
