Eagles earn win, draw to open tennis season

The Pecos Eagles tennis team came up with a win and a tie on Saturday, in the opening matches of the Spring portion of their 2001-2002 tennis season, playing in Monahans against the Loboes and the Brownfield Cubs.

Coach Mike Ortiz said Pecos opened with a 9-9 tie against the Cubs, and then posted an 11-6 win over Monahans, after scoring two wins during the fall portion of the season against the Loboes.

"I didn't have my top three girls and my No. 5 girl was sick, so I had to move No. 4 to No. 1, and move No. 6 to No. 2, move No. 7 and 8 up and bring in two freshmen," Ortiz said.

Pecos' regular No. 4 seed, Elizabeth Carreon, was able to come up with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Brownfield's Virginia Cano playing at No. 1 seed, but the Cubs won the other eight girls singles and doubles matches, while the Eagles won eight of nine matches on the boys' side.

"If we had had our full team I think we would have beaten them easily. But I was impressed with the team, especially the freshmen. They finally tasted victory," said Ortiz. "It was the first time those two girls (Catherine Garcia and Sara Natividad) had played and they were real nervous … They didn't win their first match, but they came back later and got a win against Monahans."

Against the Loboes, the Eagles lost three of the four matches at No. 1 seed and both matches at No. 6 seed in singles, but won almost everything in-between. Stephen Lamb, Michael Orona and Joel Sotelo picked up both singles and doubles wins for Pecos, while on the girls' side Garcia also won her singles match and Whitney Lamb picked up three victories in singles play, and twice in doubles, with Chantel Orona and with Jay Dannelley in mixed doubles play.

The Eagles will be back in Monahans a week from today to face the Loboes, and before that, will go to Crane for a dual meet this Saturday.
