Andrews, Alpine grid victories change Eagles' hoop schedule

Victories by the Alpine Bucks and Andrews Mustangs in the area round of the state high school football playoffs this past weekend have shortened up the schedule this week for the Pecos Eagle boys' basketball team.

The Eagles were scheduled to face the Bucks in Alpine on Tuesday and compete in the Andrews Tournament on Thursday through Saturday, but coach Tino Acosta said the game with the Bucks has been canceled while the Andrews Tournament has been shortened to a two-day event.

Acosta said last week the Bucks' game would be canceled if Alpine stayed alive in the playoffs, and the Bucks defeated Shallowater on Friday, 21-20. "All of his starters are on the football team, so he doesn't have anybody to play," Acosta said.

Andrews is different. The Mustangs were short a few players, but had enough to win last Tuesday in Pecos, 59-38. But with Andrews scheduled to face Southlake Carroll in Abilene Saturday night, Acosta said, "Their tournament is only going to be a Thursday-Friday.

"I know we're going to play two games on Thursday and two on Friday, but I just don't know who we're going to play yet," Acosta said of the round-robin tournament format. The Eagles were scheduled to open with Andrews on Thursday, and Acosta said he should have the revised scheduled by tomorrow.

Andrews defeated District 1-4A champ El Paso Riverside at home on Saturday, 31-14, while Alpine will face Kennedale on Friday in San Angelo in the Class 3A regional quarterfinals. Pecos was beaten in the bi-district round of the Class 4A playoffs, 45-7, by El Paso Parkland, which was routed in the area round on Saturday at Monahans by Frenship, 49-13.
