Eagles survive struggle to get past San Elizario

By JON FULBRIGHT
Staff Writer

The Pecos Eagles have finally reached a level of consistency for  the 2001 volleyball season. It's not the level coach Becky Granado would  like them to be at, but "a victory is a victory," she said after the  Eagles' 15-7, 15-13 win over San Elizario on Tuesday at the Pecos High  School gym.

For the eighth straight time the Eagles won the first game of their match, and then had to struggle in the second game. Pecos scored nine straight points to close out the opening game, but then fell behind by a 9-2 score in the second game, and later trailed 12-10 after tying the score at 10-all.

"Leslie (Rodriguez) came alive at last. She had a couple of good kills," Granado said. Rodriguez had a five kills for points at the end of the two games, bouncing two spikes in off the net in the second game, as did Becca Wein for match point.

With the shortest team in district, San Elizario coach Joe Olivas played all six of his girls back on defense instead of up at the net, and since the Eagles have one of their shorter teams in a while this season, that caused problems for Pecos' hitters.

"It's tough when you have nobody on the net and nobody blocking to try and find an open spot to hit to," Granado said. "There are not going to be too many with six girls playing back."

Pecos did find some spots in the opening game without having to redirect any kills off the next. Wein opened up with a kill and Christina Arenivas also scored off a spike as the Eagles went up early by a 4-1 score. Victoria Gomez also had an ace during that time, but San Eli came back and tied the game off an ace by Valerie Macias, then took the first lead off a bad relay by the host Eagles.

San Eli was up 7-6 afte a kill by Valerie Barraza went the Eagles started their 9-0 run off the tip of an overset by Jennifer Martinez. Rodriguez then got the first of her three kills for points in the opener, with the final one putting Pecos ahead 12-7. It took the Eagles a full rotation to get their 13th point, but San Elizario's problems serving kept them from catching up, and the Eagles finally finished things off on two unforced errors and a Martinez spike.

San Eli also had some unforced errors in Pecos' second game comeback, after the Eagles mistakes helped the visitors jump out to a seven-point lead. "I can't figure them out," Granado said. "On the court they look like they've lost it, then they come to the huddle talking like they want to win, but when they go back onto the court they're a totally different team."
