Carrera celebrates third birthday

Elias Carrera celebrated his third birthday on Saturday, Sept. 29, with a party held in his honor at Maxey Park.

Theme for the special event was "firefighter" theme.

The kids enjoyed a fire engine piñata and cake.

His favorite gift was a fire engine truck given to him by his Carrera cousins.

His parents are Salvador and Mirta Carrera and he was joined in the celebration by his brother, Efren.

Torres deployed to Europe, earns badge

Specialist 4th Class Joseph Torres, Jr., with Company C, 2 nd Batallion, 75th Ranger Regiment, has been deployed to Europe from Fort Lewis, Washington.

Torres recently earned the Expert Infantry Badge.

He is currently serving as the squad team leader for his Ranger Team and has also earned the Parachutist Badge and Ranger Tab from Fort Benning, Ga.

He is the son of Joseph and Esmeralda Torres of Aurora, Ill., and formerly of Pecos.

Grandparents are Juan and Sylvia Portillo of Pecos.

UTPB to sponsor blood drive

In response to the recent national tragedy, Odessa College and the University of Texas of the Permian Basin, will sponsor a blood drive as an expression of respect for the victims and their families and as a community service.

The blood drive, conducted by both schools' Student Activities offices and United Blood Services, will be held from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m., Monday, Oct. 15, at the Options Gallery in the Odessa College Learning Resources Center.

Interested donors may give blood without an appointment or may arrange a time to donate. To schedule an appointment or for more information, contact the Odessa College Student Activities Office at 335-6403.
