OC instructor to represent Texas
Odessa College Adult Basic Education coordinator David Heath was among
three educators selected to represent Texas at the National Symposium on
Adult ESL (English as a Second Language) Literacy Research and Practice,
held Sept. 5-8, in Washington, D.C., at the Smithsonian Institution.
"David has worked very hard on the Odessa College ESL program over the
years," said John Tucker, OC director of Adult Basic Education. "He is well
known and highly regarded around the state," he said.
Heath was nominated to attend by Tucker and was selected by the Division
of Adult and Community Education of the Texas Education Agency.
Tucker added that Heath's selection was based on statewide recognition
of his leadership and dedication to the adult ESL population of Texas.
The symposium examined current issues in adult ESL instruction and program
administration, including recent research and its implications for practice.
Attendees also participated in International Literacy Day activities and
the National Book Festival sponsored by the Office of the First Lady in cooperation
with the Library of Congress.
Heath has taught at OC since 1988 where he also is lead ESOL instructor
(English for Speakers of Other Languages).
