Behrens named executive director for TxDOT

Michael Behrens, a long-time state transportation engineer, was named executive director of the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) by the Texas Transportation Commission.

Behrens, who has been TxDOT's assistant director for engineering operations since April 1998, is the 18th person to head the transportation agency since it was created in 1917. He began work as executive director on Sept. 1 and replaces Wes Heald who is retiring.

Behrens, 53, began his career with TxDOT in 1971 as an engineering assistant in the department's Yoakum District and served in numerous engineering positions including area engineer, district planning engineer, assistant district engineer and district engineer.

As assistant executive director, Behrens has overseen TxDOT's engineering operations for the agency that has a $3 billion annual highway construction program.

"Behrens has the right combination of skill and experience to keep this agency moving forward and to provide Texans with the safest and most efficient transportation system," said John W. Johnson, Texas transportation commissioner. "His broad transportation and management experience will serve Texas well."

TxDOT has 14,500 employees and is responsible for the 79,000-mile state highway system. TxDOT's responsibilities also include public transportation, aviation, motor vehicle registration, special truck permits, regulation of motor vehicle dealers, water transportation, rail, tourism and pedestrian, bicycle and traffic safety.
