Staff donates the "gift of life"
Twenty-one West Texas State School staff members donated 31 units of the
"Gift of Life" in a blood drive sponsored by the WTSS Clinic and United Blood
Services held recently.
Sabra Hill, Director of Nurses at WTSS, spearheaded the drive, which is
the most recent in a long history of participation by West Texas State School
staff. The first WTSS blood drive was held in 1989, and the response from
those who overcame their fear of needles was noteworthy. Fifty-one units
of blood were collected in that first drive, which is still the record.
In 1992, the state school doubled its efforts by beginning semi-annual
drives. Texas Tech University nursing staff began coordinating the activity
in 1997 and provided further incentives to donate by supplying homemade cookies
and other treats to those who made blood donations.
