Eagles looking to regroup against Bucks, Bronchos
The Pecos Eagles, who are pretty much back to square one after their Saturday
afternoon performance at the Cantaloupe Classic Volleyball Tournament, will
try to regroup today against the same two teams they started the 2001 season
against, when the Eagles travel to Alpine to face the Bucks and Odessa High
Bronchos this afternoon at 4:30 p.m.
The Eagles got an easy win over district rival Fabens in the first game
of their third place match Saturday, then fell apart in the final two games
and lost, 3-15, 15-4, 15-4, to drop to 3-10 on the season.
"We just seem like we're happy to be out there, that's all," said coach
Becky Granado, as her team had problems both serving and setting up spikes
against Fabens, one of the teams the Eagles figure to battle for a post-season
berth beginning in mid-September.
Two weeks ago in Odessa, the Eagles opened their 2001 season with a 15-5,
15-8 loss to Alpine and a 15-2, 15-8 loss to Odessa High. Granado made several
changes to her varsity roster and lineup after that loss, and the Eagles
seemed to be improving over the past week, until Saturday's loss to Fabens.
"It looks like I'll have to look at another lineup change," said Granado,
whose team faces and even tougher challenge later in the week, when they
go to the Seminole Invitational. Pecos will face Hereford, Amarillo Caprock
and Seminole, which beat Fabens in pool play on the way to winning the Cantaloupe
Classic on Saturday.
Pecos' freshmen and junior varsity teams will also be playing Alpine and
OHS today. The JV won consolation in their own tournament this past weekend,
beating Wink, 15-4, 15-5, after downing Alpine's JV, 8-15, 15-0, 15-13, in
the consolation semifinals. On Friday, the JV beat Presidio, 15-6, 15-6,
and lost to Andrews, 15-14, 15-13, and Odessa Permian, 15-7, 15-7, in their
pool matches. Permian won the tournament title over OHS, 15-12, 15-11.
