Balmorhea festival set for Saturday

The 26th Annual Oasis of West Texas Labor Day Festival will be held this coming Saturday in Balmorhea from 9 a.m. to 1 a.m. in Downtown Balmorhea and at the RV Park site.

This year's festival will include the World Championship Frijole Bean Cook-off and Fajita Cookoff, for which pre-entries are required. The cook-off will take place in the downtown area. Prize will be awarded to the top finishers in each division.

Also scheduled as part of this Saturday's events is the first annual Balmorhea Ranch Rodeo, which will begin at 10 a.m. at Hoffman Arena. The rode is limited to 12 teams and will feature Remuda Roping, Team Sorting, Team Tying, Calf Branding and Cow Milking and expands on the team roping competition that was held for the first time as prt of the Labor Day Festival last year.

At night on Saturday, the Cruces Band from Las Cruces, N.M. will perform during a free street dance in Downtown Balmorhea. The dance will run from 9 p.m. until 1 a.m.

Also as part of the festival, the monthly First Friday Trade Days will be moved to Saturday for September, and space will also be available for food booths and arts and crafts booths in the downtown area. The trade days event will be at the ole' Country Corner Store on Main Street. Vendors are welcome and for further information, call 375-0296.

Brisket sale Friday to benefit Hernandez

A brisket plate fundraiser will be held this Friday to help pay for medical expenses for Bertha Hernandez. The plates will be sold from 11 a.m to 2 p.m. at Saragosa Hall, at Sixth and Locust streets and will be $4 apiece.

Deliveries will be made on orders of three plates or more. To order, call 445-5225.
