Eagles suffer late problems in scrimmage

There were no big surprises one way or the other for the Pecos Eagles volleyball team, during their weekend scrimmages against six other squads in Pecos and Monahans.

"We're about the same. We started out real strong and then kind of faded out. We lost our concentration," said Eagles' coach Becky Granado of the scrimmages, on Friday against Fort Davis and Wink at the Pecos High School gym and on Saturday in Monahans against the Loboettes, Odessa Permian, Kermit and Odessa High.

"We did some good things. As far as passing we did a good job passing the ball, and the hitting was what I expected it to be. We had a couple of good blocks, which is something we're going to have to have, but ball dropped in too much. We're not playing as aggressive as we should," Granado said.

The Eagles had been working out with a dozen juniors and seniors as part of the varsity squad, but the Eagles' coach said that lineup will change on Tuesday, when Pecos goes to Odessa High for their season openers against the Bronchos and Alpine Bucks.

"I'm going to carry 10 girls," she said, adding she may add some sophomores to the varsity squad, which graduated most of their front line players from a year ago.

Seniors Michelle Saenz and Christina Arenivas are the team's lone returning blocker from last year, and she and Tiana Terry were the middle blockers for the Eagles during their scrimmages over the weekend. Three other seniors, Jessica Rodriguez and back line players Kathy Maldonado and Victoria Gomez are the other returning players for Pecos.

Tuesday's matches against OHS and Alpine are scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m. at the OHS gym. Pecos' junior varsity and freshmen teams also scrimmaged over the weekend, and will begin their seasons on Tuesday against the Bucks and Bronchos.
