Ornelas picked to attend NJTL Florida camp

Tennis practice begins next week for Pecos Eagle players, but  Eagles' sophomore Natalia Ornelas will be spending it in Florida,  participating in the USA Tennis' National Junior Tennis League Invitational  Tennis Leadership Camp.

Her mother, former Pecos Eagles' tennis coach Bernadette Ornelas, said Natalia was a last minute applicant, but was one of two Texas players selected. "She was chosen along with another young man from the Houston area," Ornelas said.

Natalia Ornelas, who was the Eagles' No. 1 seed in girls singles this past season, will be spending next week at the University of South Florida as one of 32 players invited to the camp nationwide. The group will visit two of the top tennis camps in the U.S. during their stay in Florida, along with working on their skills at the South Florida campus.

The NJTL was established in 1969 by Arthur Ashe, Charlie Pasarell and Sheridan Snyder, to provide both tennis skill development and development in social leadership. The Tennis Leadership Camp began in 1984 to provide an educational and motivational tennis experience for participants who may not be able to afford the expense of regular tennis camps.

The other Pecos Eagle players will be opening their workouts next week, under new coach Mike Ortiz. Bernadette Ornelas resigned as the varsity tennis coach last month and was replaced by Ortiz, who was the former Pecos junior high tennis coach.
