Hoops clinic brings in 16 PHS players
Volleyball and tennis pre-season workouts will begin next Monday. Monday
and Tuesday it was Pecos High School basketball players who were working
out inside the PHS gym, as part of a basketball clinic put on by Dr. Chet
Sample of Sul Ross State University in Alpine.
"We have 16 girls, and all of them are incoming freshman through 12
graders," said Eagles' varsity basketball coach Veronica Valenzuela. "There
was a mix-up on what was posted on Ch. 6. It was supposed to be for grades
7 through 12, but it was put in as 9 through 12 and no junior high girls
showed up."
"Dr. Sample, the longtime SRSU basketball coach, had those girls who
were at the clinic working on posting up for inside shots and guarding
post players while near the basket during Tuesday's session, along with
shooting drills," Valenzuela said.
Valenzuela also said they were missing two varsity players during the
two-day clinic, while most of the players at the clinic were on the junior
varsity or freshman teams last year. "We have three sophomores and three
freshmen out there. The rest of them are all juniors," she said.
Regular season play for the girls' basketball team won't begin until
November. The Eagles finished fourth last year in the District 2-4A basketball
standings, missing out on a shot at the playoffs with a loss in their final
regular season game.
