Eagles' coach nets trophies at tournament
By JON FULBRIGHT
Staff Writer
PECOS, Wednesday, June 27, 2001 -- A couple of the first place trophies
at the Black Gold Tennis Tournament on Friday didn't travel very far away
from Pecos Eagles' tennis coach Bernadette Ornelas, who hosted the tournament
at the Pecos High School tennis courts.
Ornelas picked up two her own trophies during the tournament, which
was divided into youth and adult divisions. She won the women's open singles,
6-1, 6-1 over Teresa Minjarez and also teamed with Art Gomez to win the
open mixed doubles title, 6-0, 6-1 over Stephanie Pharoah and Tye Graham.
Ornelas said, "Some of the players couldn't make it through both days
because of the heat," and a couple of divisions did not have enough players
for full brackets, though there were some who came from as far away as
Abilene to compete in the tournament. "One of them (Tom Kelleher) even
won two of the boys divisions," she said, as Kelleher took both the 14
and under and 16 and under division titles, defeating Midland's Matt Helm
in both brackets
His brother, David Kelleher, lost to Pecos' Francisco Ornelas in the
finals of the boys 12 and under single,s 6-0, 6-3. Levi Valdez of Iraan
defeated Kevin Conley of Odessa for consolation, 6-1, 6-2.
In the boys' 14 and under division, Tom Kelleher won the finals, 6-2,
6-0 over Helm. Michael Conley of Odessa won consolation by default over
Pecos' Frankie Hernandez after winning the first set, 6-0. In the 16 and
under singles, Kelleher defeated Helm by a 6-2, 6-4 score, while Pecos'
Stephen Lamb won the consolation title by a 6-4, 6-2 score over teammate
Orlando Mendoza.
On the girls' side in 14 and under singles, Andrea Valdez won the title
by a 6-1, 6-1 score over Pecos' Imari Ornelas, with Whitney Lamb defeating
Kelsey Crum of Alpine for consolation, 6-2, 6-2. And in junior mixed doubles,
Courtney Campbell and Michael Conley won the title, 6-1, 6-1 over Imari
and Francisco Ornelas.
In the other older divisions, Shane Zimmerman of Alpine won the men's
open division singles, 7-5, 7-5 over Ben Hawkins of Monahans. Randy Graham
won consolation, 6-2, 6-1 over Jay Dannelley, while his sons, Tye and Trent,
lost in the men's open doubles finals to Hawkins and Ashish Chopra of Monahans,
6-1, 6-1.
The Black Gold Tournament, formerly the Highway 80 Tournament, is one
of a series of tournaments put on across West Texas during the summer.
While it also included adult divisions, the tournament concluded this year's
Pecos-Barstow-Toyah summer tennis program.
