Golfers Cagigial, Enriquez capture top tourney flight
Golfers Steve Enriquez of Fort Worth and Henry Cagigal of San Angelo ran
away from the field in the Championship Flight of the Pecos Men's Golf Association's
Memorial Day Weekend Tournament, as the pair shot a 125 to win by five strokes
over a pair of teams.
Matt Burkholder and Curtis Howard won second on the first hole of a playoff
over Mike Stone and Bob Golightly, after both teams shot 130s over the two-day,
36 hole tournament. Enriquez and Cagigal held a one-stroke lead after shooting
a 63 on the first day of the two-man low ball tournament, then followed that
up with a 62 on Sunday, while Burkholder and Howard shot 66-64 and Stone
and Golightly shot round of 64 and 66.
There were a total of six flights and 130 golfers entered in the annual
tournament this year. Local golfers Ismael Juarez and Steve Valenzuela captured
first place in the First Flight of the tournament, shooting a 67-68-135 to
win by one stroke over Rick and Blanton Baker of Alpine, who shot 70-66-136.
Jim Pogue and Jim Espy were third, with 67-60-137 scores.
In the Second Flight, Johnny Burnett and Sean Cain were the winners, shooting
70s both days for a 140 score, one stroke up on Pablo Rivera and Rene Molinar,
who shot 66-75-141. Royce Cassell and Charlie Claburn were third, with a
73-70-143.
In the Third Flight, Freddy Hernandez and Frank Gonzales won a scorecard
playoff for first over Joe and Michael Carrillo, after both teams shot 138s
over 36 holes. Hernandez and Gonzales had round of 67 and 71, while the Carrillos
shot 68 on Saturday and 70 on Sunday. Taking third place were Al Dominguez
and Al Hernandez, who finished at 140 after round of 70 both days.
Jack Ruiz and Elesio Martinez on the Fourth Flight, shooting 69-72-141.
Luis Carrasco and Jack Galindo were second with a 73-71-144 and Jay Nabors
and Gary Hennessey were third, with a 74-71-145 score.
In the fifth place, A.J. Chavez and Phillip Perez shot a 74-75-149 to
capture first place, two strokes ahead of Ronnie Stookseberry and Ray Allen,
who shot 77-74-151. They were two strokes up on the third place finishers,
Alvin Gomez and Ray Evaro, who shot 75-78-153.
The next scheduled tournament at the Reeves County Golf Course will be
The Sonny Gordon Tournament put on by the Knights of Columbus on July 21-22.
The two-person tournament will use a low-ball format on Saturday and then
six holes of low-ball, six of alternate shot and six of a scramble format
on Sunday.
The tournament field is limited to 66 teams. For further information,

First summer athletic programs for PBT students get underway
Three of the Pecos-Barstow-Toyah summer athletic programs get underway
this week, with sign-ups for the summer golf program scheduled today from
5 to 7 p.m. at the Crockett Middle School gym.
Classes begin on Wednesday with Tina Hendrick as instructor. They will
run and will run Monday through Thursday until the end of June at the Crockett
Field. Times are 8-8:45 a.m. for Grades 1-2; 9-9:45 a.m. for Grades 6-7;
and 10-10:45 a.m. for Grades 3-5.
The program is open to all P-B-T students and fees are $5 for one child,
$8 for two and $10 for three or more in a family.
Summer tennis and weightlifting also begin this week, while the P-B-T
track, basketball, swimming and volleyball get underway next week.
The first session of summer tennis begins Wednesday and runs through June
8, while the second runs from June 11-22. Pecos High School tennis coach
Bernadette Ornelas is course instructor, with each day's activities divided
up by grades.
Kindergarten and first graders will go from 8 to 8:30 a.m., second and
third graders from 8:30 to 9 a.m., fourth through sixth grades from 9 to
9:45 a.m., junior high students from 10-10:45 a.m. and high school players
from 11 a.m. to 12 noon. Students need to bring a racquet, water jug, hand
towel, sunscreen and a cap or sun visor.
Summer weightlifting will began at the PHS field house on Monday and will
run through June 15 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and from June 18 through Aug.
3 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. with the exception of the Fourth of July weekend.
Head football coach Gary Grubbs will be the supervisor.
