Seijas departs on deployment

PECOS, May 4, 2001 - Navy Fireman Apprentice Herman J. Seijas, son of Merced J. and Edel J. De La Garza, of Pecos, recently departed on a six-month deployment to the Western Pacific Ocean and Arabian Gulf while assigned to the guided missile frigate USS Curts, home ported in San Diego.

As part of the Middle East Force, Seijas' ship is participating in maritime interdiction operations to enforce U.N. sanctions restricting trade with Iraq. While inspecting vessels suspected of violating the sanctions, USS Curts is playing a major role in maintaining U.N. policies.

Although the primary mission of Seijas' ship is anti-submarine warfare, Curts is also equipped with guns for surface actions and anti-aircraft missiles. Helicopters with sonar and torpedo capabilities are also embarked aboard.

Seijas is a 2000 graduate of Pecos High School of Pecos and joined the Navy in June 2000.

OC student wins first place in state

PECOS, May 4, 2001 - Odessa College cosmetology students recently took first-place honors and earned numerous awards at a SkillsUSA-VICA state competition, qualifying one OC student as the state's only representative for the national finals this summer.

SkillsUSA-VICA, formerly Vocational Industrial Clubs of America, is a national organization serving over 245,000 high school students, college students and professionals involved in training programs for technical, skilled and service occupations.

At the Harlingen meet, the OC students competed in practical skills and written examination categories, and submitted hair and makeup designs utilizing mannequins, according to Lou Ann Hitt, cosmetology professor and club sponsor.

In the skills competition, Kay Jones won first place and Bethany Potter placed third. The skills competition examined competence in hair cutting, hair roll-up (setting wet hair), preparing daytime and evening comb-out hairstyles.

With her first-place win, Jones will represent Texas at the national finals June 25-29 in Kansas City, Mo.

Mendoza celebrates second birthday

PECOS, May 4, 2001 - Matilda Margueite Mendoza celebrated her second birthday on April 15.

Matilda's and her cousins, aunts and family members had a great time at her home in San Angelo.

She is the daughter of Fidel and Marge Mendoza of San Angelo.

Her grandparents are Marcos and Georgia Mendoza of Pecos and the late Jesus and Carmen Rodriguez of El Paso.

`Voices of Faith' comes to Pecos

PECOS, May 4, 2001 - Voices of Faith of the Permian Basin will be in Pecos at 6 p.m., Saturday at the Pecos High School.

The group will be sharing and spreading the love of Jesus through songs of praise.

The event is sponsored by St. James Baptist Church. The pastor for the church is Joe L. Terry.
