Rally in fifth by Jackets sends Eagles to 9-6 loss

PECOS, May 2, 2001 - The Pecos Eagles' softball team was just able to make a big early offensive output stand up in their final regular season game. But they couldn't pull off the trick twice in a row, and the Kermit Yellowjackets rallied on Tuesday for a 9-6 home field win, in a playoff practice game for both teams.

The Eagles finished District 2-4A play with a 10-0 record for the first time ever, and Tuesday's game was a tune-up for their area round playoff game against Andrews in Midland on Friday. They came in off a 9-7 win over San Elizario, in a game where the Eagles raced out to a 6-1 lead, then had to survive a pair of San Eli comebacks.

This time, the Jackets never let the Eagles get too far ahead _ Kermit scored three times in the first inning after Pecos took a 4-0 lead, and pushed a run across in the second, after the Eagles widened their lead to 6-3. But pitcher Amanda Soltero shut the door on Pecos over the final five innings, while the Jackets got to pitcher Stephanie Herrera for five runs in the fifth inning to win the game.

Herrera went five innings for the Eagles and took the loss, with Alexa Marquez pitching the final inning for Pecos.

Both teams had problems on defense Tuesday. Pecos collected just four hits and committed five errors, while Kermit made seven errors while collecting only five hits.

The loss dropped the Eagles to 13-10 on the season going into their playoff game against Andrews, at Muggs Field in Midland on Friday, starting at 6 p.m. It's the first meeting between Pecos and Andrews in three years, since they were part of District 4-4A in 1998, the Eagles' first season of varsity softball play.
