Pecos, San Eli play for 2-4A baseball title
PECOS, April 27, 2001 - The Pecos Eagles are 0-1 in district title games
in San Elizario since moving into District 2-4A three years ago.
This afternoon they'll try and even that record, when they travel to
San Eli for a 5 p.m. game to decide the District 2-4A baseball championship
and the first round bye in the Class 4A playoffs.
The Eagles had a chance two seasons ago in football to claim the 2-4A
title in San Elizario, but were beaten by the rival group of Eagles. However,
in that case both teams ended up playing bi-district games the following
week, while in this one the winner faces not only a bye, but an easier
road through at least the next round of the Class 4A playoffs.
The district champion will get next week off, then will face either
Hereford, Big Spring or San Angelo Lake View in the area round of the playoffs.
The loser will take on either El Paso Ysleta or El Paso Parkland in the
bi-district round next week, with the winner then meeting District 3-4A
champion Canyon Randall in the area round.
Aside from the difference in playoff format, the other difference about
this game is the Eagles already have beaten San Elizario twice this season,
by a 13-6 score at the Alpine Tournament in March, and three weeks ago
at home, a wind-delayed 12-5 victory.
In that game, Pecos scored five runs off starter Bo Solis in the first
inning, then saw San Eli push across five in the second inning against
Barney Rodriguez. But the sophomore was able to shut the door after that,
and the Eagles then scored five times in the fourth inning and added single
runs in the fifth and sixth innings.
Eagles' coach Bubba Williams said Rodriguez, 6-0, would start again
today against San Eli, which also figures to come back again with Solis,
who was hurt in the early innings last time by control problems, while
errors cost Rodriguez in the second inning against San Eli.
"We'll probably go with Barney and I expect him to give us a good effort,"
Williams said following Tuesday's 15-0 win at El Paso Mountain View. "Our
kids will rise to the occasion on Friday."
San Elizario comes into the game.
