Tips help when working in yard

PECOS, April 5, 2001 - As springtime nears our yards and gardens are waiting patiently for a little tender loving care to get them off on the right track for the year. If you are not careful in your yard you may be requiring your back to do more than it was designed to do.

Springtime is the time that people get outside after "hibernating" for the winter and want to make their yard look good again. While we have been busy inside over the winter watching the Super Bowl or the movie of the week our spine has not been very busy and needs some patience and understanding before stressing it in the yard.

Here are a few simple rules to remember before working in the yard:

_ Always, always bend at the knees and not the back. This one activity alone could save Americans untold amounts of suffering.

_ If you are going to be lifting or carrying objects use a wheelbarrow and grip with the palms of your hands and not your finger tips.

_ Most Texas yards have a way of growing rocks over the winter. If your yard is one of them be careful on how much you lift. If something is too heavy set it down immediately and get help.

_ If the house looks like it could use a coat of paint be careful on the amount of time you spend looking up over your head painting. Staying in that position of a long enough period of time will strain the neck.

If you do end up with some soreness or pain after working in the yard or garden the bet thing you can do is put ice on your injury. Ice will provide some pain relief and most importantly it will help to reduce the swelling and inflammation occurring in those joints that you haven't used in over four months. Never put heat on a fresh injury.

Parents need to listen to teen-agers

PECOS, April 5, 2001 - Adolescence is a challenging time of transition for teen-agers and parents. As children enter their teens, parents must modify their parenting approach.

"Adolescents begin questioning the rules," said Dr. Liza Bonin, a clinical psychologist in the Learning Support Center at Texas Children's Hospital. "When this occurs, parents tend to react negatively because they no longer have the same level of authority."

In addition to being rebellious, teen-agers are developing cognitive skills and beginning to think about possibilities. During this developmental stage, parents have influence but not control, which means they need to work hard to maintain a positive parent-child relationship and instill values, not just rules.

Listening to teen-agers with warmth and empathy and expressing a genuine interest can help. Although the parent-child relationship changes during adolescence, parents should remain consistent in applying discipline and emphasizing the consequences of their children's actions.
