Eagle seeking wins to remain atop standings

PECOS, March 30, 2001 - First place will be on the line for the Pecos Eagle girls softball team tonight, and could be on the line for the Eagle boys as well, as they host the Canutillo Golden Eagles while the girls play on the road against the San Elizario Eagles.

Pecos goes to San Eli for a 5 p.m. game, which had been scheduled to close out the first half of the District 2-4A season for the Eagles until Tuesday's rain-out against El Paso Mountain View. Instead, Pecos will try to open up a gap between themselves and San Elizario this afternoon, while the host Eagles will hope to knock Pecos out of first place in the 2-4A standings for the first time in 2½ years with a victory.

Pecos is 3-0 in district and 6-9 on the season following last Friday's 15-0 win at home over Canutillo, while San Eli bounced back from their loss to Fabens a week ago to down Canutillo this past Tuesday, by a 16-8 score. San Eli rallied from a 4-0 deficit after two innings, with Valerie Soto getting the win.

Pecos' Stephanie Herrera one-hit Canutillo a week ago and coach Tammy Walls said she would start today's game against San Eli.

Pecos and San Elizario are tied for first in the 2-4A baseball standings, both at 2-0, after the Eagles won at Fabens this past Tuesday, 9-4, while San Eli defeated Clint, 10-7. Meanwhile, Canutillo is 1-1 after routing El Paso Mountain View by a 12-0 score.

Carlos Torres got the win for the Golden Eagles, whose main problem so far this season has been a lack of hitting. For tonight, Eagles' coach Bubba Williams said, "The one that pitched against us here last year (Julian Lopez) was a sophomore. I'm expecting to see him, plus they got two kids back from grades."

Angel Villalobos, who beat Clint a week ago, 8-5, is scheduled to start on the mound tonight for Pecos. The senior allowed five hits and only one unearned run, in the seventh inning.
