OC offers assistance with tuition for truck driving

PECOS, March 27, 2001 - Students interested in Odessa College's professional truck driving classes may be eligible for tuition assistance from the Odessa Workforce Center.

In announcing the cooperative effort between Odessa College and the Odessa Workforce Center, Martha Kunkel, OC director of community service programs, said that the tuition assistance program combined with the OC classes provides an excellent training opportunity for individuals deciding to change careers due to dead-end jobs or layoffs.

The OC classes start every three weeks and offer comprehensive classroom and behind-the-wheel training for a profession that, according to industry estimates, will require 60,000 new drivers annually.

Kunkel said that since the tuition is $3,500, interested individuals are urged to apply as soon as possible for the tuition assistance available for classes beginning on or before June 11.

She added that starting salaries can be as high as $30,000 or more with full benefits. Kunkel also noted that OC provides career counseling and job referrals for its students through the college's career services department.

OC's truck driving school and the tuition assistance program is restricted to eligible students 21 years of age or older.

Interested applicants should contact the Odessa College professional driver program at 580-0860 or the Odessa Workforce Center at 367-3332 for more details.
