She weighed six pounds, 10 ounces and was 19 inches long.

She is welcomed by her grandparents, Rusty Reddell of Waco; Jo Reddell of Stephenville; Jesse Mendoza of Carlsbad, N.M. and Diane Tomlinson of Citrus Springs, Calif.

Great-grandparents are Mrs. Jean Green of Midland; Mr. and Mrs. David Mendoza of Clovis, N.M.; Mr. and Mrs. Delbert Massey, also of Clovis, N.M. and Ms. Julia Noble of Hominy, Okla.

Children should select appropriate sports

PECOS, March 2, 2001 - Participating in sports is a great way to engage in physical activity. Conferring with a pediatrician can help ensure the activity is a good fit for the child.

Before selecting a sports activity, parents need to assess children's interests and whether their skills are suited to the sport. Children should be given the opportunity to try a sport, unless there is an obvious reason why they should not.

"Your child's doctor can do a pre-participation sports examination to determine if there is a medical reason not to participate," said Dr. Albert Hergenroeder, chief of Adolescent and Sports Medicine at Texas Children's Hospital. "It's unusual for a child to be excluded for a medical condition, unless it obviously precludes participation in the sport. However, we need to start adapting sports for children with special health-care needs. This will provide venues for them to participate in sports."
