Bears again get win by forfeit

PECOS, Nov. 2, 2000 -- They didn't play last week, and they're not going to play this  week, but the Balmorhea Bears are now on the edge of being assured of  playing in two weeks, when the six-man high school football playoffs  get underway.

The Bears, who were idle on purpose a week ago, get another Friday off this week, as for the second year in a row their game against the Sierra Blanca Vaqueros has been canceled. Sierra Blanca was forced to forfeit the game due to a lack of players, after also forfeiting their game a week ago against the Sanderson Eagles.

The Bears will now await what figures to be a battle for the District 8-A six-man title next Friday at home against Sanderson. Both teams are 2-0 in district, pending Balmorhea's official forfeit win over Sierra Blanca as of Friday night and the Eagles' home game against Marathon.

A win by Sanderson would clinch playoff spots for both themselves and the Bears, while Marathon, with a 2-1 district mark could still have a shot at a playoff berth if they win their final regular season game over the Eagles. Marathon would could then earn a post-season berth with a Balmorhea win next week over Sanderson, while a loss by the Bears to the Eagles would jumble things up, leaving all three teams with 3-1 marks and forcing a tie-breaker to decided the district's two playoff representatives.

While the playoff qualifiers could be settled this Friday with a Sanderson win, the Bears won't know their bi-district opponent until next Friday, after their game with the Eagles and the final regular season game in District 7-A, between Grandfalls and Sands. Both teams are 3-0 in district and could clinch playoff berths with wins on Friday, before facing each other to close out regular season play on Nov. 10.

Balmorhea lost at Sands back in September by a 33-31 score, and then won at home two weeks later over their former district rival by a 62-38 score, for the Bears' first victory over Grandfalls since 1995.
