Pecos Cattle Women install new officers
The West of the Pecos Cattle Women have entered their 25th Anniversary
year with a luncheon meeting at the ranch home of Barbara and Mark Wheelis,
south of Marfa.
Emily Fernandes, a Pecos member, installed Jane Crittendon, Valentine,
as president; and four vice-presidents; Jody Miller, publicity and public
relations; Barbara Wheelis, education; Kathryn Steen, membership; and Brandi
Lacy, promotion. Installed as treasurer, Doris Kelly joins two secretaries,
Hester Ann White and Caroline Fox.
A group of interested and concerned ranchwomen met at the Marfa Feed
Store in October of 1975 and evolved into the West of the Pecos Cattle
Women, joining the Texas Cattle Women and the American National Cattle
Women in their dedication to promoting beef and the cattle industry. The
membership of the organization has expanded to include seven counties,
west of the Pecos, with 80 members.
Meetings are held at noon on the first Thursday of each month except
July, and are rotated throughout the area. In addition to promoting beef,
the organization sponsors a scholarship at Sul Ross State University and
joins The Texas Cattle Women in their scholarship program. We invite all
interested in our objectives to join our organization. The November meeting
will be on the second, at noon at the Cueva De Leon restaurant in Fort
Davis.
Teachers named to Who's Who list
A select group of America's teachers are being honored by their toughest
critics…their former students, in the sixth edition of Who's Who Among
America's Teachers, 2000.
All of the approximately 114,000 teachers being honored were selected
by their former students who themselves are currently listed in Who's Who
Among American High School Students, or The National Dean's List, publications
which recognize 5% of our nation's high school and college students respectively.
Paul Krouse, publisher of Who's Who Among America's Teachers said, "There
is no greater honor teachers can receive than to be recognized by former
students for their excellence and dedication. In this publication we clearly
have the best teachers in America selected by the best students."
The students were requested to nominate the one teacher from their entire
academic career who "made a difference in their lives" by helping to shape
their values, inspiring interest in a particular subject and/or challenging
them to strive for excellence. Many of the students commented about the
enthusiasm and knowledge their teachers demonstrated in the classroom,
and many praised their teachers for their ability to relate to youngsters
on a personal as well as a professional level. One student wrote about
her teacher saying," She made education something pleasurable, instead
of a dreadful ordeal by letting me spread my wings and showing me the best
way to fly."
Local educators honored in Who's Who Among America's Teachers 2000 include,
Gail Slack Box, Pecos-Barstow-Toyah ISD; Timothy M. Flanagan, Pecos High
School; Jane Jones Green, Austin Elementary School; Priss Rowe McNutt,
Pecos High School; Sandra Eileen Overcash, Pecos High School; Carolyn A.
Rankin, Pecos High School; Betsy Sikes, Pecos High School; Karen Ann Waters,
Pecos High School and Brian K. Williams, Pecos High School.
