Basketball schedules set for Eagles
PECOS, Oct. 25, 2000 -- The Pecos Eagle boys basketball team will face
three of their former district rivals at home to open the 2000-2001 season
next month, a season coach Tino Acosta hopes will be better for Pecos than
this past year ended up.
Pecos will play its regular season opener on Nov. 14 against
the Monahans Loboes, with the Eagles trying to come back from a
winless season a year ago, while in January they'll look to halt a District
2-4A losing streak that currently stands at 16 games.
Meanwhile, new girls coach Veronica Valenzuela is hoping
2000-2001 brings improvement for her basketball team, but they won't
be starting their season until after Thanksgiving this season, on
the road against the Alpine Bucks.
The girls will play Alpine on Nov. 27, then come back the
following night and play Monahans in their home opener. District play for the
girls will start at home on Jan. 5 against Clint, with Pecos trying to step
up from their one-win season of a year ago.
The Eagles have never had much height, particularly on the boys'
side, and this coming year will be no exception. Right now, Acosta
is hoping to rely on quickness on defense and outside shooting to
try and turn things around, since the varsity may not have any player
taller than 6-foot-1 on the team this season.
After opening against Monahans, the Eagles have a tentative game
set up for Nov. 17 at home against Fort Stockton, depending on whether
or not both schools are still involved in the high school football
playoffs. Pecos will definitely play their next game as scheduled, on Nov. 21
at home against the Andrews Mustangs.
The Eagles will go to three tournaments in December,
at Andrews on Dec. 1-2, in Monahans at the Sandhills Tournament on
Dec. 7-8, and at Fort Stockton on Dec. 29-30. They then kick off the new
year with trips to Greenwood and Fort Stockton, before hosting Canutillo
in their District 2-4A opener.
Pecos' girls also will go to the Sandhills Tournament and will
play in the Midland Christian Tournament over the Christmas break.
Their district opener against the Lions will be a 7:30 p.m. game, while
their remaining four 2-4A home games will be part of doubleheaders with
the boys, with the girls varsity game starting at 6 p.m. and the boys at
7:30 p.m.
The junior varsity games for both teams will be played in the old
PHS gym again this season, while freshman contests will be in
both gyms, starting at 4:30 p.m.
While their varsity season will start two weeks later than normal
this season, the Eagles will have a couple of pre-season scrimmages, on Nov.
7 and on Nov. 11 against Odessa Permian in Odessa.
The first scrimmage will depend on how the Eagles do in the
Class 4A volleyball playoffs, which begin this weekend. Over half of
the Eagles' returning varsity players are members of the volleyball team.
Pecos drew a first round bye in the playoffs and will take on
either Canyon Randall or Andrews in the area round of the playoffs, on Oct.
31 at a site and time to be announced. Randall defeated Dumas
Tuesday night 15-13, 9-15, 15-4 to take second in District 3-4A, and will
face Andrews, which lost their District 4-4A second place playoff match
to Snyder, 15-9, 9-15, 15-10, this Saturday.
