Eagles hunt victory in San Elizario

PECOS, Oct. 3, 2000 -- The Pecos Eagles regained control of their own destiny as far  as winning the District 2-4A volleyball title is concerned, with a victory  on Saturday over El Paso Mountain View.

Tonight, they'll try to keep it against the San Elizario Eagles, who'll be looking to regain control of their own playoff destiny, when the teams meet in San Elizario, starting at 7:30 p.m. CDT.

The game is a rare Tuesday night road contest in district for the Eagles, who moved into a three-way tie for first this past Saturday with a 15-2, 15-4 win over the Mountain View Lobos. Both teams are 3-1 and tied with Clint, which beat Fabens on Saturday after losing to Mountain View a week ago. Pecos will face Clint on the Lions' home court this Saturday.

The Eagles' win over the Lobos was their best effort at home in a month, and their best since coach Becky Granado returned to the team in early September. "They started playing more relaxed. I think they're starting to get used to me being back now, and I'm not on their backs like I was every moment at the start," she said.

San Elizario is a game behind all three teams, with a 2-2 record after their 15-10, 15-12 win over Canutillo on Saturday, and can at worst tie Pecos for third place at the midway point of the district schedule with a victory tonight.

The Eagles have usually played their best volleyball on the road this season, including an easy win at Fabens on Sept. 23. But last season their trip to San Elizario was a struggle, as they took 10-0, 4-0 and 5-0 leads in all three games, then had to fight off San Elizario to pull out a 15-7, 9-15, 17-15 win, which allowed Pecos to beat out San Eli for second in the 2-4A standings.

The host Eagle team is playing with a mostly-new cast from a year ago, but do have back Fran Martinez, a second-team all-district player last season. Last week she had 10 kills while setter Valerie Barraza had 21 assists, in San Elizario's three-game win over Fabens.
