Pecos Rodeo slack events get underway

PECOS, July 3, 2000 -- Fourteen-time world's champion Guy Allen took the mid-morning lead today in Steer Roping, as slack competition got underway in the 2000 West of the Pecos Rodeo, at the Bucks Jackson Rodeo Arena.

With several more cowboys still to go in the first go-round of the steer roping, Allen came up with an 11.9 second time to grab the lead. Allen, who is seeking his 10th consecutive National Finals Rodeo championship, currently holds a $10,000 lead in the standings over Rocky Patterson, who also roped during this morning's first go-round and posted a 16.1 second time.

Because of the large number of entries at the West of the Pecos Rodeo, first go-rounds of the roping events will be held during slack competition today and Tuesday. Second go-rounds will also start on Tuesday, with a special slack competition set for 7:30 p.m. Tuesday night, along with the opening of the ladies barrel racing and bull riding competition.

The official opening of this year's rodeo will be 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, which will also include the first sections of the saddle bronc and bareback riding competitions. Along with a full night of events, Wednesday's rodeo will also open up with a B-1 bomber flyover, scheduled during the National Anthem performance.

Fans at this year's rodeo will also be able to keep track of the times and point totals for the first time on an electronic scoreboard, which has been put in just above the chutes at the west end of the arena. The scoreboard will provide the number of each cowboy, which will be listed in each night's West of the Pecos Rodeo program, and their time or point total, along with the number, time or point total of the current leader in that event.
