Vacation Bible School set
Vacation Bible School will be held from 9 a.m. until 11:30 a.m., at First
Baptist Church, 5th and Hickory Streets.
Bible school will begin June 12 and end on June 16.
All children are invited to attend.
Cate home is site of close of year luncheon
A delicious salad luncheon, served on the lovely screened-in porch of the
Nan and Al Cate home in Verhalen, was held as the final meeting of the
club year for the Modern Study Club. The festivities began at 12:30 p.m.,
on May 6.
The thought-quote for the gathering was, "Friendship is love with understanding."
Lena Harpham, club president, closed her tenure as president, at the
meeting haveng served for two years, 1999-2000.
Prior to the luncheon, Margie Williamson, scholarship chairman, introduced
special guests, Erin Paz and her mother, Diane Paz of Pecos. Erin was the
recipient of The Modern Study Club's _ Pecos High School Senior Scholarship
for 2000.
The business meeting and other activities were held in the living room
of the home with Mrs. Harpham, outgoing president in charge.
The Club Collect and the Pledges to the United States of America Flag
and the Texas Flag were repeated in unison by those present.
Mrs. Williamson presented Miss Paz, who addressed the group, telling
of some of her high school activities, both scholastic and athletic, which
included Angels Mentoring, Latin Club, Cheerleading, Band and National
Honor Society. She plans to atend San Angelo State University and study
Print Journalism. Paz had just returned that morning from State Competition
in Austin in Journalism.
Minutes of the previous meeting were read by Bobbi Lang, secretary and
Pearl Gustafson, treasurer, presented a report of club finances.
President Lena Harpham then spoke about accomplishments during her tenure
and highlighted the field trips to Balmorhea State Park, Scarbrough-Lineberry
House, Ellen Noel Museum and Ft. Davis Historical Site.
She also told of the following outstanding programs: Decorating Vests
presented by Art Chairman Joyce Morton; Making Final Memories and Preventive
Care Diabetes by Homelife Chairman Pearl Gustafson, John Rediger, presentor;
Auto and Highway Safety presented by Public Affairs Chairman Doris Moorman;
The Constitution-Division of Power and Unique Presidential Facts by Americanism
Chairman, Margie Williamson, presented; Ken Garlitz, Guatemala An Ancient
Civilization _ A Modern Problem presented by International Affairs Chairman
Nan Cate; Federation Unity in Diversity _ presenter Frances Dunn, Western
District President of TFWC; Early Space Endeavors _ Education Chairman
Juracy Ray, presenter Lena Harpham and Texas Heritage Sam Houston, Senator,
Soldier, Teacher, presented by Texas Heritage Chairman Laura Teal.
Nan Cate, Federation counselor, reported on two bills before Congress,
one bill number HR 1070 provides coverage for uninsured women with breast
cancer. The second bill, which is still in committee, in to allegate other
funds for research on the prevention and cure of breast cancer.
Cate urged members to write our congressman about these important women
issues.
New officers of the 2000-2001 were installed. They are president Catherine
Travland, vice-president Doris Moorman, secretary Joyce Morton, treasurer
Bobbi Lang, reporter Margie Williamson and parliamentarian Lena Harpham.
Mrs. Morton was installed by Mary Barfield. Mrs. Morton installed the other
officers.

Sullivan, Americanism _ Iris Reddick and Juracy Ray, Public Affairs _ Pearl
Gustafson and Bobbi Lang, International Affairs _ Nan Cate, Education _
Juracy Ray, Home-Life Doris Moorman to serve in 2000. Lena Harpham was
named Federation Counselor.
Those attending also enjoyed a display of Past President's scrapbooks,
several of the books dating back to the time before some were members of
The Modern Study Club.
Roll call was answered by giving program suggestions for 2000-2001.
Present for the meeting were guests Erin and Diane Paz, members, Mary
Barfield, Nan Cate, Paula Fuller, Peal Gustafson, Lena Harpham, Bobbi Lang,
Gretchen Luna, Doris Moorman, Joyce Morton, Juracy Ray, Iris Reddick, Phyllis
Stool, Etta Sullivan, Catherine Travland and Margie Williamson.
