Eagles setting up playoff with Bears
PECOS, May 1, 2000 -- Pecos Eagles' baseball coach Bubba Williams was hoping
to have his bi-district playoff series against El Paso Bowie set up by
sometime late this morning.
The Eagles, the District 2-4A runners-up, and the Bears, the third place
team out of District 1-4A, will meet this weekend, with the winner going
on to face the Pampa Harvesters in the area round of the Class 4A playoffs.
Williams said he was hoping for a best-of-three series against the Bears,
but the schedule for the games still has to be decided.
"I'll see if I can get them to come down here for two games on Friday
and then if we have to play a third game, play it there on Saturday, but
they'll probably want to play one game there and two here," Williams said.
Under the agreement between the two districts, the second place team has
home field advantage both in this series and in the other bi-district series,
which matches Fabens against El Paso Ysleta.
Although the Bears finished behind Ysleta and El Paso Riverside in the
District 1-4A standings, Williams said Bowie did beat District 2-4A champ
Clint by a 7-6 score earlier this season. Clint and Riverside drew byes
for winning their district titles and will begin play in the area round
of the playoffs next week.
The Eagles will be hoping for a repeat of the bi-district round of the
softball playoffs two weeks ago, when San Elizario and Clint came away
with wins over their District 1-4A rivals. Pecos' girls drew the bye in
softball, but lost their area round game last Thursday in extra innings
to Hereford by a 10-9 score. San Elizario lost to Frenship, 4-2 and Clint
was beaten by Dumas, 14-1, in their area round games.
Tickets still on sale for sports banquet
PECOS, May 1, 2000 -- Tickets are still on sale for Thursday's annual Pecos
High School All-Sports Banquet, which will be held for the first time at
the new Pecos High School gym.
Former Monahans High School head coach and superintendent Jerry Larned
will be the guest speaker at the banquet, which will begin at 7 p.m. Athletic
director Bubba Williams said tickets will be available at the high school,
along with KIUN Radio and Dan's Music and Video downtown. Tickets are $8
per person.
All-district athletes for the Eagles from the 1999-2000 school year
will be recognized at the banquet, and the Doc Lunday, Craig Woods, Joe
Shoemaker, Norma Matta and Joe Bob Kelton awards will also be announced
during the banquet.
