Eagles seek to stay ahead of Canutillo

PECOS, Apr. 20, 2000 -- A district title is out of the question now for the Pecos Eagles, but missing the playoffs remains a possibility, depending on the outcome of the Eagles' 5 p.m. game today against the Canutillo Golden Eagles.

Pecos plays its final District 2-4A road game today in Canutillo, and the Eagles will be trying to avoid dropping into fourth place in the district standings with a loss.

That became a possibility on Tuesday, after Clint clinched the District 2-4A title with a 14-2 win in Pecos, while Canutillo and Fabens were winning their games over El Paso Mountain View and San Elizario. With a 4-3-1 mark, the Eagles are tied for second with Fabens, with Canutillo a game back at 4-4.

"We've got a chance to get second place and home field advantage," said Eagles' coach Bubba Williams after Tuesday's loss. "One thing we can do it gut it up on Thursday or just go home."

The Eagles had to rally to beat Canutillo at home earlier this month, 7-5. After falling behind 4-3 in the top of the sixth inning, the Eagles won on a two-run homer by Josh Casillas and a two-run pinch-single by Ivan Guebara.

Casillas will start on the mound this afternoon for Pecos, after picking up his first win last Friday at Mountain View after returning from a two-week break due to tendonitis of the elbow. The senior struck out 10 and allowed three hits in a five-inning, 11-1 win.

Canutillo went to Mountain View on Tuesday and came away with a 14-8 victory. Julian Lopez, who went 5 2/3 innings in the Golden Eagles' loss in Pecos, figures to get the start again today.

The Eagles will control their own fate, but cannot clinch a playoff spot, no matter what the outcome of today's game or of Mountain View's game against Fabens. Those two teams still have a tie game to make up, and Fabens will host Canutillo to close out regular season play next Tuesday. Meanwhile, the Eagles close their regular season schedule at home against San Elizario, and also will have to finish their earlier game against San Eli, which was suspended with the score tied 4-4 after nine innings.
