Juarez to have seventh birthday
Alexa Juarez will celebrate her 7th birthday on Saturday, with a party
to be held in her honor at her grandmother's house. Theme for the event
will be Tweety.
She is the daughter of Jimmy and Nola Juarez of Barstow.
Vernon back from deployment duty
Navy Fireman Keat K. Vernon, son of J.L. Vernon of Pecos, recently returned
from a six-month deployment to the Adriatic, Mediterranean and Black seas
while assigned to the guided-missile frigate USS Elrod, home ported in
Norfolk, Va.
During the deployment, Vernon's ship participated in numerous exercises
including Exercise Cooperative Partner. USS Elrod joined forces from Bulgaria,
Georgia, Greece, Romania and Turkey for the annual exercise, geared towards
overcoming the challenge of cooperating with different navies who possess
different equipment, language and tactics.
Vernon's ship also visited cities in Crete, Croatia, France, Greece,
Israel, Italy, Spain and Turkey, where Vernon and his fellow shipmates
had the chance to relax, sightsee, shop and enjoy the local cuisine.
Vernon's ship is a combatant ship designed to protect amphibious expeditionary
forces, underway replenishment groups and merchant convoys from undersea
attack. In addition to torpedoes, frigates carry helicopters that have
sonar and torpedo capabilities, expanding the ship's reach. The 1996 graduate
of Georgetown High School joined the Navy in November 1996.
