New coach gets look at future runners

Donna Gent is getting her first look at some of the Pecos Eagles’ future track team members this month, as the new girls track coach serves as instructor for the Pecos-Barstow-Toyah ISD summer track program.

Gent, who takes over from Veronica Valenzuela, comes to Pecos from Fort Hancock, where she served as head track, volleyball and basketball coach for the Mustangs. Her husband, Pat, already served as a junior varsity baseball coach this past season for the Eagles.

She began the summer track program on June 1, and said there were just over a dozen students participating during the first week of the class, which runs through the end of the month.

The normal course hours are from 8 a.m. until 12 noon Mondays through Thursdays, but Gent said, “We have a few coming out in the afternoon because they’re in summer school and can’t come out here in the morning.”

She said most of those in the program at the outset were from the third, fifth and eighth grades, but added they were still taking sign-ups for the program, which is being held at the Eagle Stadium track. While the morning sessions are four hours long, Gent said the students can get their workouts done faster than that. “They come in and work out and once they get it in, they’re free to leave. They don’t have to stay around for all four hours.”

The start of the workouts begins with the warm-up and stretching drills. “We do that to warm them back up for running, and after that we do the advanced workouts,” she said. Most of those in the program this summer are working on running, as opposed to field events, and Gent said they would try and take those in the program to the summer area track meets. “Coach Willis is getting a list of the meets, and we will be attending them,” she said. The meets are normally held either on Fridays or Saturdays during June and early July.
